Work with a VO Coach who books VO Work!

I know what you might be thinking: Why is Terry stating the obvious in the title of his blog? Let me explain. Far too many people offering voiceover coaching might be good at teaching a syllabus but have never booked a voiceover gig in their lives!

This is a serious problem: These coaches often lack the ability to teach the acting skills necessary to secure work and get on talent agency rosters. It’s crucial to work with coaches who are actively booking gigs each week, as they can share practical insights on how to read commercial and narration scripts effectively.

When it comes to getting your demos professionally produced, these coaches know how to get your demos heard and how to market yourself effectively because they are actively engaged in their own careers. If I were just starting out, I would want to learn from someone who is successfully navigating this field.

In today’s world, with so many people advertising themselves as coaches—especially on social media—it’s important to do thorough research and find out how much experience they have as actual voice actors. Don't hire someone who just teaches. Hire someone with a resume to back up the advice they are providing you.

It’s also vital to work with a coach who isn’t focused on telling you how much money you can make. At the start of a voiceover career, skill development should be your primary focus. While skills can lead to financial success, breaking into this business requires hard work, patience, and perseverance. Be wary of charlatans who promise guaranteed success. I’ve seen some make outrageous income claims, and I find this type of business practice alarming.

At UVT Coaching, we prioritize helping you build the skills necessary to have the best chance to succeed. We emphasize good coaching, high-quality demos, and effective marketing strategies. We don’t make promises we can’t keep, such as income guarantees or promises of instant success.
